John Locke, Theory of Ideas, Representative Theory, an Adverbialist Interpretation, Joseph Priestley

Johnu Lockovi bývá připisována tzv. reprezentační teorie vnímání. To znamená, že osoba nemůže vnímat věci samotné, ale pouze nepřímo skrze ideje, které reprezentují kvality těchto věcí. Někteří filosofové nicméně tuto reprezentační teorii nepřijímají a předkládají alternativní výklady, a to zejména ve 20. století. Cílem tohoto článku je nejen ukázat, že tyto soudobé alternativní interpretace mohou nalézt oporu v samotném díle Johna Locka, ale zejména zdůraznit, že podobná alternativní interpretace byla Lockovi připisována jeho soudobým komentátorem Josephem Priestleyem.

So-called representative theory of perception is attributed to John Locke. It means that a person can not perceive things themselves but he can perceive these things only indirectly through ideas which represent qualities of these things. However, some philosophers opposed this representational theory and provided other alternative interpretations in the 20th century. Goal of this article is not only to show that the contemporary alternative interpretations may find their support in works of John Locke, but especially to highlight the fact that such an alternative interpretation has been attributed to Locke by his contemporary commentator Joseph Priestley.
