The wood-decaying polypore Fomes fasciatus (Polyporaceae, Basidiomycota) is distributed throughout the southeastern United States and Arizona to South America. It is externally almost indistinguishable species from Fomes fomentarius as the most widely understood in Europe. In this paper, consequently the morphological and anatomical features of F. fasciatus basidiomes/strains are given. In total, 42 woody host species are associated with this polypore. The greatest number of the fungal records came from oaks Quercus spp., namely Q. alba, Q. arizonica, Q. falcata, Q. laurifolia, Q. nigra, Q. phellos, Q. virginiana, and Quercus sp. These were followed in decreasing frequency by Carya spp., Inga spp., Celtis spp., Magnolia spp., Hevea spp., Apuleia leiocarpa, Andira sp., Betula spp., Castilla elastica, Casuarina spp., Delonix regia, Fraxinus sp., Ulmus sp. The majority of host genera was recorded only once.
