Za základní vlastnosti frazémů všech typů považujeme: ustálenost obsahu i formy, závaznost, reprodukovatelnost, vysoký stupeň lexikalizace a větší či menší míru obraznosti a emocionality. Velmi důležitý je při lexikální analýze frazémů princip tematický. Analýza ukázala, že na vzniku frazémů se ve všech západoslovanských jazycích nejvíce podílejí tři velké tematické celky: člověk (jeho život od narození do smrti), svět zvířat a příroda.

The fundamental charakteristics of all types of phrasemes include their stability of content and form, their fixed structure, reproducibility, a high degree of lexicalization, and a greater or lesser degree of figurativity and emotionality. The thematic principle is a very important aspect of the lexical analysis of phrasemes. The analysis demonstrated that the emergence of phrasemes in all West Slavic languages is connected primarily with three central thematic fields: human beings (human life from birth to death), the animal world, and the natural world.
