Ostrava byla osvobozena od nacistů na konci tzv. ostravské operace, jíž se účastnili i čeští tankisté. Správu města a regionu Slezska převzali představitelé komunistické strany, kteří obsazovali významné posty představiteli zahraničního odboje. Ostrava měla velký význam jako centrum klíčového průmyslu, ale také školství a kultury. Německé obyvatelstvo bylo koncentrováno v pracovních táborech, vysídleno v divokém a řádném odsunu, řada Němců díky němu unikla retribučnímu soudnictví.
