Bei Wissensvermittlung spielen sowohl sprachliche als auch visuelle Mittel eine wichtige Rolle. Auch in Sachbüchern werden mehrere Zeichensysteme kombiniert um die Informationen benutzerfreundlich zu vermitteln. Im vorliegenden Aufsatz wird beobachtet, welche Arten von Bildern in Sachbüchern zu finden sind und in welchem Anteil sie erscheinen; in welchem semantischen Verhältnis sie zum Sprachtext stehen; wo die Grenzen von einzelnen Zeichensystemen liegen und wie der Bild- und Sprachtext miteinander kooperieren bzw. nur zusammenhanglos nebeneinander vorkommen. Das Untersuchungskorpus bilden zwei ausgewählte Sachbücher für Kinder und zwei für Erwachsene, damit der altersspezifische Gebrauch von Zeichensystemen untersucht werden kann.

Both language and image play an important role in the transfer of knowledge. In non-fiction books several sign systems are combined to encode a meaning in a reader-friendly way. In the article "Overcoming the borders of sign systems: from coexistence to cooperation" the author discusses the following issues: the types of images that can be found in non-fiction books, the proportions in which they appear, the semantic relationship between text and image, the limits of individual sign systems and the way how image and text cooperate if they occur next to each other. In order to examine the age-specific use of sign systems, the research corpus embraces two non-fiction books for children and two for adults.
