The aim of this paper is to provide basic information about the art of interpretation, i.e. the hermeneutics and to show how closely it is related to translatology. The so-called hermeneutic circle has been presented as a central principle according to which the texts are to be analysed: each part of a work has to be interpreted with respect to the whole work and vice versa. The thoughts of famous philosophers such as Friedrich Schleiermacher, Paul Ricouer and, of course, Hans-Georg Gadamer have been presented here as well.
