Economic history, Slavic nations, Cisleithania, Czechs, Economic activation, Austro-Hungarian Empire, Pre-war period

This study examines the economic emancipation and development of Slavic nations, with a primary focus on the Czech population within Cisleithania prior to World War I. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the Habsburg Monarchy underwent profound structural transformations driven by rapid industrialization. The authors analyze how Czech entrepreneurs, politicians, and civic institutions actively challenged the dominant German economic hegemony in the region. Through the establishment of independent financial networks, industrial enterprises, and localized trade organizations, Slavic communities achieved significant autonomy. This process of economic activation not only reshaped the market dynamics of Bohemia and Moravia but also provided a vital material foundation for upcoming national emancipation. Ultimately, the chapter demonstrates that pre-war economic strengthening was a crucial prerequisite for the eventual political independence.
