Současná válka na Ukrajině má regionální a širší globální důsledky a zasahuje i africký kontinent. Po invazi na Ukrajinu očekávaly Spojené státy, Evropská unie i samotná Ukrajina, že Africké unie (AU) a její členské státy zaujmou jasný postoj na podporu Ukrajiny. K překvapení Západu však byla reakce AU na válku na Ukrajině vlažná. Bylo to ovlivněno především potřebou vyvážit přístup AU a jejích členských států k Rusku i Západu a přáním zachovat neutrální pozici v evropském konfliktu.Tato kapitola se zaměřuje na reakce a přístup AU k současné válce na Ukrajině. Jejím cílem je zachytit motivace AU jako geopolitického aktéra a identifikovat klíčové pozice členských států vůči oběma stranám konfliktu (Rusku a Ukrajině podporované Západem) s ohledem na historické, geopolitické a ekonomické faktory. Dále představuje a hodnotí geopolitické, bezpečnostní a ekonomické důsledky války na Ukrajině pro Afriku. Kapitola se bude také zabývat možným dopadem zdrženlivého postoje AU a jejích klíčových členských států (jako je Nigérie a Jižní Afrika) na podporu Ukrajiny, zejména pokud jde o vztahy s EU.Kapitola vychází z obsahové a diskurzivní analýzy vybraných médií, prohlášení afrických politiků a představitelů AU a oficiálních dokumentů AU.

The current war in Ukraine has regional and broader global consequences, affecting the African continent as well. Following the invasion of Ukraine, the United States, the European Union, and Ukraine itself expected a clear stance from the African Union (AU) and its member states in support of Ukraine. To the surprise of the West, however, the AU’s response to the war in Ukraine was lukewarm. This was primarily influenced by the need to balance the AU and its member states’ approach to both Russia and the West and the desire to maintain a neutral position in the European conflict.This chapter focuses on the reactions and approach of the AU to the current war in Ukraine. It aims to capture the motivations of the AU as a geopolitical actor and identify the key positions of member states toward both sides of the conflict (Russia, and Ukraine supported by the West), considering historical, geopolitical, and economic factors. Additionally, it presents and evaluates the geopolitical, security, and economic consequences of the war in Ukraine for Africa. The chapter will also discuss the potential impact of the AU and its key member states’ (such as Nigeria and South Africa) restrained positions on supporting Ukraine, particularly regarding relations with the EU.The chapter is based on content and discourse analysis of selected media, statements by African politicians and AU officials, and official AU documents.
