Poland Ostrava, onomastics, street names, the idea of a big city

Autor analizuje nazwy ulic północno-wschodniej części dzisiejszej Ostrawy, która do 1918 roku tworzyłą miasteczko pod nazwą Polska Ostrawa. Mieściło się na prawym brzegu Ostrawcy i konkurowała z wielką Morawską Ostrawą. To powodowało , że mieszkańcy Polskie Ostrawy chcieli rozwijać swoje miasteczko na wzór Morawskiej Ostrawy. Widać to w nazwach ulic, które od XIX wieku przetrwały do dziś, a także planach rajców Ostrawy odtworzenia miejsc – kolonii czy osad – związanych z wydobyciem węgla w Polskiej Ostrawie

The author analyzes the names of the streets in the north-eastern part of today's Ostrava, which until 1918 formed a town called Polska Ostrava. It was located on the right bank of the Ostrava River and competed with the great Moravian Ostrava. This meant that the inhabitants of Polish Ostrava wanted to develop their town following the example of Moravian Ostrava. This can be seen in the street names that have survived to this day since the 19th century, as well as the plans of the Ostrava councilors to recreate places - colonies or settlements - related to coal mining in Polish Ostrava.
