Záměrem kurátorů festivalu bylo pozvat umělce z celého světa, aby přijeli do Kasselu, aby se sešli a společně vytvořili živý umělecký festival v termínu Dokumenty v Kasselu. Překrývání přitom souvisí i s prostředím a situací. Prostřednictvím uměleckého projektu „Overlapping Kassel“ byli uměleci mobilizováni k tomu, aby reflektovali skutečný život a čelil současné situaci a reagoval na současné pozadí přežití lidí v důsledku přírodních a člověkem způsobených katastrof. Z toho můžeme vidět tři překrývající se významy, jeden je potvrzení času a místa, druhý je zohledněním pracovních metod a třetí je směr tvorby. Hlavním médiem tvorby je zde performance art, která má formou performance art reagovat a vyjádřit aktuální životní situaci a podmínky člověka.
