Artykuł ukazuje związek poezji polskiej w XIX wieku z życiem religijnym narodu, potwierdzony wykorzystaniem poszczególnych wierszy jako tekstów pieśni kościelnych, śpiewanych do dziś bez świadomości ich autorstwa. Okazuje się, że wiele pieśni skomponowano do słów takich poetów, jak Franciszek Karpiński, Jan Czeczot, Teofil Lenartowicz, Stefan Witwicki, Władysław Syrokomla, Kornel Ujejski. Ich autorzy, odmiennie niż poeci najwyższej miary czy też uznani za wieszczów, przechowywani są w literackim „czyśćcu”. Napisane przez nich słowa do pieśni spełniają ważną funkcję wyrażania uczuć religijnych, ale także pielęgnowania narodowej wspólnoty i pamięci o historii Polski. Przechowują okruchy geniuszu, o których nie pamiętają podręczniki szkolne czy niefachowi czytelnicy, oraz ślady potocznej wiedzy Polaków i ich pojęcia o świecie. Stanowią autentyczny trzon tożsamości polskiej.

The article shows the relationship between Polish poetry in the nineteenth century and the religious life of the nation, confirmed by the use of individual poems as texts of church songs, sung to this day without being aware of their authorship. It turns out that many songs were composed to the words of such poets as Franciszek Karpiński, Jan Czeczot, Teofil Lenartowicz, Stefan Witwicki, Władysław Syrokomla and Kornel Ujejski. Their authors, unlike the poets of the highest caliber or recognized as prophets, are kept in the literary ‟purgatory”". The lyrics to the song they wrote fulfill an important function of expressing religious feelings, but also of nurturing the national community and the memory of the history of Poland. They store crumbs of genius that school textbooks or unprofessional readers do not remember, as well as traces of the common knowledge of Polish and their concept of the world. They constitute the authentic core of Polish identity.
