Dean Reed, GDR, cultural policy

Der amerikanische Sänger Dean Reed besuchte die DDR im Jahr 1971 im Rahmen des Internationalen Dokumentarfilmfestivals in Leipzig. Der linke Sänger gewann bald an Popularität beim Publikum und wurde zum Gesicht der ostdeutschen Kulturpolitik. Hinter dem Eisernen Vorhang wurde er als Musiker und Schauspieler in allen Staaten des sozialistischen Lagers berühmt. Sein freiwilliges Lebensende wurde Gegenstand vieler Spekulationen.

In 1971 the American singer Dean Reed visited the GDR as part of the Leipzig international documentary film festival. The left-wing singer quickly won popularity, becoming the outward face of East Germany’s cultural policy. Behind the Iron Curtain he became famous as a musician and actor in all countries of the communist bloc. His suicide became the subject of intense speculation.
