In fact, secessionist movements have historically always been perceived by the state concerned as a breach of order that needs to be restored. Secession was therefore seen as a negative phenomenon, and if it was realistic, the states tried to reverse the situation by force. But it didn't always work out. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the debate over the recognition of such emerging states focused more on the act of recognizing statehood, but the end of the First World War and the founding of the League of Nations brought a major shift and research focused on proclaimed by an independent state. At the theoretical level, the discussion began to lead to whether the state becomes a state through international recognition or is a state precisely because it meets all the criteria of statehood. Experts' opinions on the international recognition of the newly formed states differed as early as the 19th and 20th centuries, and this is no different today. And, as the contributions in this publication suggest, it is clear that there will be no common consensus in the near future.
