Studie se zabývá termínem "Bürgertum", v současnosti jedním z nejfrekventovanějších pojmů strukturálních dějin industriální epochy. V češtině má tento termín tři základní významy - měšťan, občan a příslušník buržoazie. Je rozebírána obsahová šíře pojmu podle lexikonu Grundbegriffe der Geschichte, podle Velkého sociologického slovníku (Praha 1996)a podle známých německých historiků zabývajících se problematikou společenských dějin předindustriální a industriální epochy L. Galla, J. Kocky či M.R. Lepsia. Závěrečné stránky přinášejí stručný přehled výzkumu občanských vrstev ve specifickém prostoru habsburské monarchie 19. století, zohledňují práce H. Stekla, E. Bruckmüllera, J. Kořalky či J. Štaifa.

The study deals with the term "Bürgertum", in these days one of the most frequent term of the structural history of the industrial epoch. This term has in Czech three basic meanings - townsman, citizen and a member of bourgeoisie. The term is analysed after the lexicon Grundbegriffe der Geschichte, after Velký sociologický slovník (The Great Sociological lexicon) (Prague 1996) and after the well-known German historians who are engaged in problems of social history of pre-industrial and industrial epoch. These are L. Gall, J. Kocka or M. R. Lepsius. The final pages bring the brief survey of the research of civic classes in the specific area of the Hapsburg monarchy in the 19th century with regard to works of H. Stekl, E. Bruckmüller, J. Kořalka or J. Štaif.
