Ze všech živočichů má nejvyvinutější schopnost volní kontroly nad vlastními činy zdravý dospělý člověk. Zdá se, že svoboda vůle, kterou tak milují filosofové, je principiálně schopností inhibice, schopností vědomě potlačovat impulzy generované určitými neuronálními systémy. Konkrétní neuronální mechanismy odpovědné za vědomí a svobodu vůle jsou však stále neznámé, i když na jejich hledání je v současnosti zaměřena nejvyšší míra pozornosti.

A healthy adult human being is a subject with the most developed ability to control his/her own acts. Free will is originally a negative competence - a capability to intentionally suppress different impulses which are unconsciously generated by brain. Although specific neuronal mechanisms responsible for consciousness and free will are still unknown, a very close attention has recently been paid to this topic. The objective of this study is to focus on a contemporary debate in the field of experimental philosophy and neurosciences related to the topic and to suggest some perspectives of future investigations.
