Opava (Troppau) wurde um 1900 zu einer modernen Stadt und zum Kulturmittelpunkt zumindest für die Elite der Stadt-Society und der zahlreich vertretenen Mittelschicht. Wie aus den Gesprächen im Rahmen der Konferenz hervorgeht, durchmachte die Stadt eine ähnliche Entwicklung wie die anderen Provinzhauptstädte (Brünn, Prag, Salzburg); im Begriff der Konferenz der Landesmetropole. Die Stadt Opava (Troppau) näherte sich in vielen Hinsichten Wien und zugleich entfernte sie sich von der österreichischen Metropole, wie jedoch die Konferenz zeigte, lässt sich zum aktuellen Stand der Forschungen auf diesem Gebiet nicht beurteilen, ob es sich um ein gewöhnliches Verhältnis einer provinziellen Residenzstadt zu einer Metropole handelt.

Belonging to the sphere of works dedicated to the up-to-date topic of domestic historiography, namely to the process of modernization of cities and municipal community in the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, the study deals with the transformation of the city of Opava from a typically provincial capital of Austrian Silesia into a modern city. Following the outline of the administrative function of the city, attention is paid to the cultural development and construction of modern infrastructure. Even though Opava did not belong to significant European metropolises around the year 1900, i.e. to the centers of avant-garde culture, financial flows, ethnical diversities, it was a modern residential city in many aspects; the administrative, education, cultural and economic center of Austrian Silesia.
