Research background: Growing urbanization, traffic congestion and increasingly dominant industrialization are worsening air quality in cities, which negatively affects the socio-environmental environment, which has a significant impact on the economic area and resilience of the entire locality. Improving air quality is therefore important for the sustainable and resilient development of cities and municipalities, as well as the health and satisfaction of all economic subjects in the modern globalized world.Purpose of the article: The article aims to show what measures and solutions in cities help to improve air quality and thereby strengthen sustainable urban development in the modern globalized world.Methods: The methods used refer to the analysis of examples of good practice from various cities. The findings are synthesized and the conclusions are inductive in nature. Against the background of a classic research of scientific literature sources, the importance of air quality on the quality of life of local residents will be emphasized, including a list of socio-economic impacts on the given locality.Findings & Value added: Successful measures concern, for example, the areas of legislation and regulations, transport, industry and energy, green infrastructure and urban planning, or the very behaviour of individual economic entities. The added value of the contribution lies in the effort to determine and categorize measures to improve urban air through an overview text and to synthesize the reasons why cities and society should try to improve their air if this is not satisfactory.
