Limes, terme antique désignant la frontière de l’Empire romain, indique non seulement la limite naturelle de l’œcoumène euro-méditerranéenne, mais aussi celle du monde « civilisé » des États, des gouvernements, des politiques officielles et de l’application de la loi. L’actualité croissante de ce thème à l’époque des migrations de masse justifie un retour au roman de Driss Chraïbi Une enquête au pays, publié pour la première fois en 1981. Les héros, un couple de policiers, pénètrent l’intérieur désertique du pays non pour enquêter sur un crime en particulier, mais plutôt pour y établir leur présence dans un territoire par ailleurs incontrôlé – le bled es-siba (« région de l’anarchie », par opposition au bled el-makhzen civilisé, soumis à l’impôt et respectueux de la loi, selon une catégorisation établie dès le XIVᵉ siècle, valable tout au long de l’époque coloniale et apparemment jusqu’à nos jours). Les policiers sont les éclaireurs de la modernité et de la « civilisation » (mot-clé important de l’écriture chraïbienne), pénétrant un monde qui refuse de se laisser gouverner, soumettre à l’impôt et policer – une Zomia au sens de la conceptualisation de Willem van Schendel.

Limes, an ancient term signifying the border of the Roman Empire, indicates not only the natural frontier of the Euro-Mediterranean oecumene, but also that of the “civilized” world of states, governments, official policies and law enforcement. Growing actuality of the topic at the time of mass migrations justifies a glance back to Driss Chra¨ıbi’s novel Une enquˆete au pays, first published in 1981. The heroes, a couple of policemen, penetrate the wasteland interior of the country not to investigate any crime in particular, but rather to establish their presence in the otherwise uncontrolled territory – bled es-siba (“region of anarchy” in contrast to the civilized, tax-paying and law-abiding bled el-makhzen according to a categorization first established in the 14th c., yet valid throughout the colonial era, and apparently till the present day). The policemen are forerunners of modernity and “civilisation” (an important key word of the Chra¨ıbian writing), penetrating a world that refuses to let itself be governed, submitted to taxation, and policed – a Zomia in the conceptualisation of Willem van Schendel.
