Die Zeichnung Johannes der Täufer und Christus mit seinen Jüngern (Ecce Agnus Dei) wurde 1610 vom Breslauer Zunftmeister David Heidenreich angefertigt, was durch die authentische Signatur des Künstlers mit Datum und der Abkürzung des Namens der Stadt Breslau eindeutig belegt ist. Die Zeichnung zeigt den heiligen Johannes den Täufer, der in der Einöde sitzt, sich dem Betrachter zuwendet, mit der rechten Hand auf Christus und seine Jünger im Hintergrund zeigt und die unten aufgeführten Worte aus dem Johannesevangelium (1,29) spricht. Dies war ein in der protestantischen Kunst häufig verwendetes ikonografisches Motiv mit eschatologischer Bedeutung – Johannes der Täufer weist auf Christus als Quelle der Erlösung hin. Bisherige Forscher haben auf die Abhängigkeit dieser Zeichnung von der Rudolfinischen Kunst hingewiesen, die sich in den manieristischen Verformungen der Figur des Johannes des Täufers und der gesteigerten Ausdruckskraft der gesamten Darstellung äußert. Das ist nicht verwunderlich, denn Heidenreich schloss seine Ausbildung nach dem Studium in den Werkstätten von Bartholomaeus Strobl dem Jüngeren und Georg Freiberger in Breslau mit Aufenthalten in Dresden und gerade in Prag in den Jahren 1597–1600 ab. Die sorgfältig ausgearbeitete Form und die vollständige Signatur mit Datum auf der Zeichnung zeigen, dass diese Zeichnung keine Vorarbeit für ein malerisches oder grafisches Werk war, sondern eine eigenständige Arbeit des Künstlers mit selbstdarstellerischer Funktion darstellt.

The drawing John the Baptist and Christ with his disciples (Ecce Agnus Dei) was made in 1610 by David Heidenreich, a master craftsman from Wrocław, as clearly evidenced by the artist's authentic signature with the date and the abbreviation of the name of the city of Wrocław. The drawing depicts St John the Baptist sitting in the wilderness, turning towards the viewer and pointing with his right hand to Christ and his disciples in the background, uttering the words of the Gospel of St John (1:29) written below. This was an iconographic theme with eschatological significance that was often used in Protestant art – St John the Baptist points to Christ as the source of salvation. Previous researchers of the drawing have pointed to its dependence on Rudolphine art, which is expressed in the mannerist deformations of the figure of St. John the Baptist and the heightened expression of the entire representation. This is not surprising, as Heidenreich, after studying in the Wrocław studios of Bartholomaeus Strobel the Younger and Georg Freiberger, completed his education with stays in Dresden and Prague in 1597–1600. The carefully crafted form and the full signature with the date placed on the drawing indicate that this drawing was not a preparatory work for a painting or graphic work, but was an independent work by the artist with a self-promotional function.
