V knize Pády říší se tým historiků, archeologů a politologů analyzuje složité souvislosti pádů největších světových říší, od starověkého Egypta až po kolaps mocného britského koloniálního impéria. Kniha odhaluje nejen dynamiku a faktory - politické, ekonomické, environmentální a sociální -, které vedly k těmto pádům, ale zabývá se také otázkou, zda dnešní velmoci, jako jsou Spojené státy, Rusko nebo Čína, stojí na prahu podobného osudu. Mohly být příčinou úpadku velkých světových říší války, vnitřní krize, hospodářská nestabilita nebo změna klimatu? A co se z těchto historických příběhů můžeme naučit pro současnost? Každá kapitola nabízí historii konkrétní říše a analyzuje specifickou kombinaci faktorů, které vedly k jejímu úpadku a pádu. Od starověkých říší Mayů a Říma až po novější příklady španělského a sovětského impéria je ukázáno, jak souhra geografie, životního prostředí, politiky, ekonomiky a kultury formovala osud těchto obrovských celků.
