The paper deals with Instructional Design as a discipline in the field of Educational Technology and describes the construction of a systems approach to the design process. The importance of models is stressed and also the categorization in line with the so called ?generation view?. The evolution of instructional design is illustrated in a subtle, step-by-step approach to models with overlying phases. The individual phases are characterized by focussing on a key concept. In the context of educational technology the importance of knowledge of the exact design procedures is highlighted.
