The synergetic effect of the elevated CO2 concentration [CO2] and high irradiance on the photosystem II function was observed for Norway spruce under both field and laboratory conditions. In order to obtain relevant information on the impact of acclimatory depression of photosynthesis under elevated [CO2] on the PSII function, the daily pattern of photochemical PSII efficiency and the xanthophyll cycle activity were studied for sunny needles of the spruces grown under the ambient (AC) and/or elevated (EC, ambient + 350 umol(CO2) mol-1) [CO2].
