V úvodu kapitoly je uvedena definice celková anestezie. Jsou zmíněny různé hypotézy o podstatě celkové anestezie počínaje historickými až po nejnovější. Je popsána anatomická úroveň účinu anestetik na CNS. Další podkapitola je věnována receptorové teorii-molekulárním cílům účinku anestetik. Zvláštní pozornost je věnována účinku inhalačních a intravenózních anestetik. V závěru kapitoly je popsán mechanismus účinku nejnovějších anestetik.

At the beginning of the chapter, the definition of general anaesthesia is provided. Various hypotheses regarding the nature of general anaesthesia are mentioned, from historical to the most recent. The anatomical level of the effect of anaesthetics upon the CNS is described. Another subchapter is dedicated to the receptor theory – molecular targets of the effect of anaesthetics. Special attention is paid to the effect of inhalation and intravenous anaesthetics. The mechanism of action of the most recently introduced anaesthetics is described at the end of the chapter.
