Klasické teorie vývoje vznikaly od počátku 20. století a často popisovaly pouze vývoj v první polovině života. Kapitola se zabývá některými nejdůležitějšími teoriemi, které ovlivnily další výzkum vývoje, s důrazem na modely popisující celý život člověka. Jde o teorie sledující různé aspekty vývoje: osobnostní charakteristiky, sociální vztahy, kognitivní nebo morální dimenzi. Na závěr je zmíněn kritický pohled na tyto teorie a vznik východisek pro další rozvoj teoretického přístupu k celoživotnímu vývoji člověka.

Classical theories of development originated from the beginning of the 20th century and often described only the development in the first half of life. The chapter deals with some of the most important theories that have influenced further development research, with an emphasis on models describing human life. These are theories that follow various aspects of development: personality characteristics, social relationships, cognitive or moral dimension. Finally, a critical view of these theories and the emergence of starting points for the further development of a theoretical approach to human lifespan development is mentioned.
