Fantasy (books, movies, TV series) occupies an important place in the panorama of contemporary culture. It can be assumed that this is due the world around us has become too relative. Meanwhile, the system of coordinates can be found in the works of fantasy, where it is relatively easy to separate the good from the bad, and the boundary between them is quite clear and easily to define. One of the most widely read Russian fantasy novelists is Sergei Lukyanenko, the writer of the popular series of patrols. Lukyanenko is also known to be a big fan of the Russian rock, and that is why the author often uses rock lyrics in his novels. This procedure serves a few functions as the rock lyrics: illustrate the state of mind of the characters; they arrange into a universal view of the world in which ordinary people, as well as magical beings, find themselves; they slow down the dynamic action of the novels and mask the Lukyanenko’s inability to report mental and emotional states of the characters; they make plots embedded in the realities of contemporary Moscow and Russia more plausible, and they also carry on to the pop culture discussion on the status of Russian rock.
